Its that time of year again—the Sawdust Art Festival opens in Laguna Beach!
This event is known all around the United States for it’s art and has been going on since 1965. It is designed to both entertain and educate the public about the art that is created in Laguna Beach, and draws more than 200,000 visitors each year from all over the world. Art enthusiasts, collectors, and novice artists come to see the unique mix of fine art and crafts that only the heart of Laguna Beach can create.
There are several unique things about the Sawdust Art Festival, for example it’s administration is made up of exhibiting members and each year new members of the Board of Directors are elected. Also, artists don’t get to pick where they want their booth, it is determined by an annual lottery. But the thing that really sets it apart from other shows is that it is non-juried—enthusiastic amateurs display their work along with accomplished veteran artists, providing the spice and variety that make every show different from the last. But its not just the artists or their work that is different every year but also the surroundings. Each year the artists themselves build a unique village of individual booths that are as varied and interesting as the work they showcase.
As visitors walk along sawdust-covered paths through a hand crafted village of fine arts and superb craftsmanship, they’ll enjoy the variety of media that will be displayed: hand-blown and fused glass, painting, jewelry, surf art, ceramics, clothing and textiles, wood and metal sculpture, scrimshaw, photography, and so much more. The festival also features demo booths such as glass blowing, complimentary hands-on art workshops, a children’s art booth, and a ceramic center. The event also features refreshments from four outdoor cafes, a saloon, and live musical entertainment all nestled in to a beautiful eucalyptus grove with it’s rippling waterfall.
Come join the visitors, residents, and artists for a truly unique experience with the arts that brings folks back year after year. Open from 10 am to 10 pm daily, June 28th through September 1st at 935 Laguna Canyon Road.
